Keeping the BMW E30 Interior Alive: Small Upgrades That Fit a 35-Year-Old Classic

Keeping the BMW E30 Interior Alive: Small Upgrades That Fit a 35-Year-Old Classic

The E30 turns 40 soon. If you own one, you already know the drill. The engine still pulls, the chassis still feels honest, and the dashboard still creaks in that specific way only an old BMW can. But the interior was designed in an era when nobody drank coffee in their car and nobody carried a phone. So you end up with a cabin that looks great but doesn't quite work for how anyone actually drives in 2026.

You have two options. Rip it apart and restomod the whole thing, or keep the character and fix the parts that genuinely bother you. This post is about the second option.

What actually gives up first

On most E30s we see, the culprits are the same. The ashtray gets used as a bin for coins, receipts, and a phone charger that never quite fits. There is no cup holder, so anything you buy ends up wedged into a door pocket or between your thighs. The cigarette lighter still works but powers nothing useful. And the exterior emblems, especially the ones that lived through 30 summers, have faded to the point where the blue looks grey.

None of these ruin the car. They just make it slightly annoying every time you drive it. Small fixes, done right, are worth more than a full interior swap.

The parts we make for the E30

Cup holders. Two versions. The standard BMW E30 Cup Holders at €34.99 is the simple one, drops in, holds two cups, done. If you want something closer to what BMW themselves might have offered if they cared about coffee in the 80s, the Premium Modular version at €53.99 has OEM-style texture and a modular layout. Both are heat resistant, which matters more than people think in a car with black interior parked in July.

Storage compartment. The original ashtray is a great piece of design that solves a problem nobody has anymore. Our E24/E28/E30 Storage Compartment (€29.99) replaces it with useful space. Same OEM texture, same fitment, just deeper and open. Works in LHD and RHD.

USB charger. The E24/E28/E30 Fast USB Charger at €29.99 goes into the cigarette lighter slot, uses OEM-style pins, and does 24W fast charging. Your phone charges properly on a road trip. The cigarette lighter itself is not a great phone charger, and you probably do not need to light cigarettes with the car's electrical system anyway.

Emblems and wheel caps. If your roundels are faded, the BMW Emblem Badge Set (€13.99) replaces the front and rear. There is a Shadowline (blacked-out) version at the same price if that suits the look you are going for. Wheel caps are covered too, the 68mm Set of 4 for €13.99.

Why 3D printed makes sense here

For a car this old, OEM interior parts are a mixed bag. A lot of them are simply not made anymore. What you can find on eBay is often used, sun-damaged, or priced by someone who knows you have no alternative. Aftermarket universal accessories usually look wrong in an E30 cabin because they were designed for a generic 2015 sedan.

Custom-fit 3D printed parts sit in the middle. They match the geometry of your specific chassis, they use material that handles cabin heat, and they cost less than hunting NOS parts. For an interior that is nearly four decades old, that is often the only sensible route.

A quick note on install

None of these need tools you do not already have. The cup holders and storage compartment are drop-in. The USB charger takes the same slot as the cig. lighter. Emblems and wheel caps are the standard clip-in job. If something feels tight, warm it up gently with a hairdryer first. Old E30 plastic has been sitting in the same position for decades and does not always want to move.

Small changes, right feel

The point of any of this is not to modernize the E30. If you wanted modern you would have bought a G20. The point is to remove the small annoyances so the car stays enjoyable to actually drive, without dragging it out of its era. A cup holder, a working USB port, and a set of fresh roundels get you most of the way there.
