If you own a 15-, 20-, or 30-year-old BMW, you already know: finding good interior parts is a moving target. OEM parts are being discontinued. Dealers charge β¬100+ for a plastic clip. AliExpress is a lottery. And 3D-printed parts are increasingly common, but nobody explains what they actually are.
Here's the honest breakdown, so you can spend your money on the right one.
OEM parts β the original factory parts
The genuine article, made by BMW or its original suppliers.
Pros:
- Guaranteed fit and appearance
- Matches original quality standards
- Available for newer chassis without hunting
Cons:
- Increasingly discontinued for classics (E30, E32, E34, E36, E38, Z3)
- Where still available, prices have climbed sharply
- Sometimes the OEM design was the problem in the first place β the E46 cup holder is a good example. Buying a new OEM version means buying the same fragile design that failed originally.
When to choose OEM: if the part is critical to structure or safety, if it's still in production, or if authenticity matters more than durability.
Aftermarket parts β generic replacements from third-party manufacturers
The wide category of non-BMW parts, from serious aftermarket suppliers to generic AliExpress items.
Pros:
- Usually the cheapest option
- Available for parts OEM stopped making
- Fast shipping from mass producers
Cons:
- Fit quality varies from great to unusable
- "Universal" often means "doesn't quite fit anything"
- Cheap plastic and injection-molding defects are common at the low end
- Photos on listings often don't match what actually arrives
- Return shipping to the seller usually costs more than the part
When to choose aftermarket: for items where a rough fit is acceptable, or when you're testing something out and don't want to commit to a premium price. Read reviews carefully.

Common misconceptions
"3D-printed parts melt in a hot car." Not the material we use. Consumer-grade PLA does have a low glass transition, but production 3D printing uses materials engineered for automotive environments (PETG, ABS-alternatives, and heat-treated variants) that handle interior temperatures well past what a car reaches in summer.
"They look cheap or unfinished." This depends entirely on the maker. Ours are printed with OEM-style texture and finish, matched to the interior of the specific car. Most buyers can't tell the difference from OEM once installed.
"They're just prototypes." Modern 3D printing at production quality is a different technology than what most people saw ten years ago. Layer resolution, material choice, and post-processing determine whether a part looks like a prototype or a finished component.
Why 3D printing wins for classic BMW interior parts specifically
- Every car has different console dimensions, LHD/RHD variations, minor year-to-year changes. Mass production isn't economical for those variations. Custom design is.
